Switching AI apps without starting over

Trying a different AI is easy. Bringing five months of accumulated context with you is the part that quietly keeps people where they are.
The thing that makes switching expensive
It is not the subscription and it is not learning a new interface. It is that the new app does not know you, and the old one did. Everything you had explained once, you now explain again, and you notice it most on the small questions where you used to get a good answer immediately.
Why this is structural, not an oversight
Memory that lives inside an AI product is an asset of that product. It makes the app better the longer you stay, which is exactly the intent, and it does not travel, which is also exactly the intent. Nobody has to be acting badly for this to be true; it is what the incentives produce.
Some products now offer an import or export of their memory, which helps, and it is worth checking whether yours does. It is still a migration you perform rather than a thing that simply follows you.
The alternative: keep the context outside the app
If your context lives in a layer of your own, switching AI apps stops being a migration. The memory does not move because it was never inside the thing you changed.
This is the practical case for a memory layer, and it is a stronger one than "the built-in memory forgets you", which is not really true any more. The built-in memory works. It just is not yours.
The test. Ask yourself what you would lose if you moved to a different AI app tomorrow. If the honest answer is "months of it knowing how I work", then that context is currently an argument for staying put, and it was not supposed to be.
