How to make AI remember you
Four options, honestly compared.
There is more than one way to stop introducing yourself every time you open an AI app. They are not equivalent, and the differences only show up later.
Option 1: turn on the memory that is already there
Most major AI apps now keep some memory of you, and for a lot of people that is genuinely enough. It is free, it is already in the settings, and it needs no new account. If you use one AI app and expect to keep using it, start here and stop reading.
The catch is not that it fails. It is that it belongs to that app. What it holds is shaped by that company's decisions about what is worth keeping, and it does not come with you if you leave.
Option 2: write standing instructions
Custom instructions, system prompts, profile fields: a paragraph you write once that gets attached to every conversation. Better than nothing, and free.
The limit is size and staleness. A paragraph cannot hold your life, and the version you wrote in March quietly describes someone you no longer are. Nothing tells you it has gone out of date; you just start getting slightly wrong answers again.
Option 3: paste your context each time
Keep a document about yourself and paste the relevant part into each conversation. This works, it is portable, and it costs nothing.
It also puts the work on you, forever, and it fails exactly when you are rushed. The tell is that you stop bothering on the small questions, which are most of them.
Option 4: a memory layer you own

None of them make a model smarter. Memory changes what the model knows about the person asking, not what it knows about the world. If the answer is wrong on the facts, memory will not save it. If the answer is right but generic, memory is exactly the missing piece.
