What to do when AI forgets your context mid-project

Why it happens, and how to stop rebuilding from scratch.

You are twenty messages into something real and the answers start drifting: forgotten constraints, contradicted decisions, suggestions you already ruled out. Here is what is happening.

What is actually going wrong

A model can only hold so much of a conversation in mind at once. That working space is the context window, and when a long conversation exceeds it, the earliest parts stop being available. The decisions you made in message four are simply not there any more.

It looks like forgetfulness. It is closer to a desk that only fits so many papers.

Three signs you have hit it

  • A constraint you set early quietly stops being respected.
  • You are offered something you already rejected, with the same enthusiasm.
  • The tone resets to generic, as if the conversation had just started.

What to do in the moment

  1. Restate the decisions, not the history. A short list of what has been settled is worth more than a recap of how you got there.
  2. Start a fresh conversation on purpose. Once drift starts, a clean thread with a tight summary usually beats trying to drag the old one back.
  3. Keep the summary somewhere you control. If the record only exists in a chat thread, it dies with that thread.

The pattern worth building. After any long session, write down the decisions in five lines. That list is the actual project memory. Everything else is conversation.

How to stop it happening again

The durable fix is to stop keeping the project's facts inside the conversation. Held outside it, the settled decisions travel with each new question, so a fresh thread is not a fresh start, and there is nothing to rebuild.

That is the difference between a bigger context window and a memory. A bigger window delays the problem. A memory removes it, because the record no longer lives in the thing that resets.

What that looks like with Tessera

The facts about your project live in your memory, visible and editable. Open a new conversation whenever you like, on your phone or in a browser, with any of several leading AI models, and the context is already there. More common questions.

Why does AI forget context in long conversations?

A model can only hold so much text in mind at once. When a conversation grows past that limit, the earliest parts stop being available, so early decisions and constraints drop out of the answers.

How do I stop AI losing track of my project?

Keep the settled decisions outside the conversation. If the facts live in a memory that travels with each question, starting a fresh thread costs nothing and there is no context to rebuild.

Does a bigger context window fix AI forgetting?

It delays it rather than fixing it. A larger window holds more of one conversation, but it still empties when that conversation ends. Memory is what survives between conversations.
